The Epson SureColor SC-P9000 is a 44-inch (111.8 cm) large-format inkjet printer for photographic, fine art and colour proofing work. It uses a 10-colour pigment ink set to produce accurate colour and prints that resist fading for decades. It suits print shops, design studios, photo labs and colleges running a shared print room.
Key Features & Benefits
- 10-colour UltraChrome HDX pigment inks: Orange and green inks widen the colour range beyond a standard CMYK plotter. As a result, Epson rates the Standard Edition at reproducing about 98% of Pantone-certified colours, so brand colours and client proofs need fewer reprints.
- PrecisionCore TFP printhead with 3.5 pl droplets: Tiny, variable-size ink droplets produce smooth skin tones and gradients. Prints therefore hold up under close inspection at a gallery wall or a client review table.
- Automatic black ink switching: Photo Black and Matte Black are both installed (11 cartridges in total). You can move from glossy photo paper to matte fine art without swapping cartridges or flushing ink.
- Flexible media handling up to 1.5 mm: The printer accepts 2″ or 3″ core rolls, cut sheets and rigid poster board through a front straight path. Additionally, a built-in rotary cutter trims roll prints automatically, which saves finishing time.
- High-capacity 350 ml and 700 ml cartridges: Larger cartridges mean fewer changes during long poster or exhibition runs. They also lower ink cost per square metre compared with smaller desktop-format cartridges.

Use Cases & Applications
For Students and Educational Institutions
The SC-P9000 is a shared-facility printer rather than a personal one. It fits well in:
- Photography and fine art departments – exhibition prints on baryta, cotton rag and canvas
- Architecture and design schools – presentation boards, renders and portfolio pieces
- University print centres – research posters, conference banners and thesis displays
Students get prints that match what professional labs produce. Meanwhile, archival inks mean graduation exhibition work keeps its colour for years.
For Business
- Photo labs and print shops – gallery prints, canvas wraps and large-format photo orders
- Advertising and design agencies – colour-accurate proofs before committing to a print run
- Packaging and pre-press – contract-style proofing (the optional SpectroProofer inline unit adds colour measurement)
- Retail and corporate marketing – in-store posters, event signage and trade-show graphics
How Does It Compare?
- vs. CAD/technical plotters (e.g. Epson SureColor SC-T series): T-series models are cheaper and faster for line drawings and maps. However, the SC-P9000’s 10-colour pigment set gives noticeably better photo quality and colour accuracy.
- vs. SC-P7000 / SC-P6000: Same engine and inks, but limited to 24″ (61 cm) width.
- vs. SC-P9500: The newer 44″ successor uses a 12-colour ink set. The SC-P9000 remains a strong value option where 10 colours meet the job’s colour needs.
Will It Work With Your Setup?
Is it compatible with Windows and Mac? Yes. Epson drivers support Windows and macOS. Original launch drivers covered Windows 7–10 and Mac OS X 10.7–10.10. Check Epson’s support site for drivers matching current OS versions before purchase.
Does it have Wi-Fi? No. It connects via USB 2.0 or Gigabit Ethernet. For shared use in an office or campus lab, a wired network connection works best.
Can it print on canvas, fine art paper and foam board? Yes. Rolls up to 0.5 mm thick cover canvas and fine art papers. Rigid boards up to 1.5 mm load through the front manual path.
How much space does it need? Plan for a floor area of at least 1.9 m wide plus clearance for loading rolls and collecting prints. At about 135 kg, installation needs two or more people.
Will it run on local power? Yes. It accepts 100–240 V, 50–60 Hz. A UPS or voltage stabiliser is recommended to protect the printhead from power interruptions mid-print.
Important Notes
- Product status: The SC-P9000 has been succeeded by the SC-P9500 in most markets. Confirm whether this unit is new old stock, ex-demo or refurbished.
- Edition: Several editions exist (Standard, Commercial, Violet Spectro). The Violet edition replaces Light Light Black with Violet ink. Confirm which edition is being sold.
- Inks in the box: Some markets ship starter cartridges (around 110 ml) rather than full 350/700 ml cartridges. Confirm what is included.
- Hard disk and SpectroProofer: Both are optional accessories, not standard.
- Minimum cut-sheet size: Sources list A4 (8.5 x 11″) or 8 x 10″. Verify against the unit’s manual.
- Warranty and service: Confirm local warranty coverage and availability of Epson-authorised service and ink supply in Kenya.
